Krasavec (KRAH-sah-vets) is a German Shepherd with two distinct sides. He is an energetic dog who eagerly approaches people, tail wagging and paws prancing, to warmly accept pets and attention. But when his professional security handler, Carlos Martinez, begins their familiar pre-work routine before a shift, Krasavec鈥檚 energy gives way to intense focus. 

That transformation reflects the trust Carlos and Krasavec have built as a team. Krasavec, who is a trained search dog, brings confidence, independence, and a powerful drive to work. Carlos provides the calm direction that helps him channel those qualities. Together, they have learned when to guide each other. And just as importantly, Carlos has learned when to get out of Krasavec鈥檚 way.

Building Trust Through Consistent Detection Dog Training

When Carlos first saw Krasavec, the German Shepherd鈥檚 size, thick coat, and intensity made him look 鈥渓ike a big bear,鈥� Carlos says. Their early detection dog training sessions reflected their unfamiliarity with one another. Krasavec wanted to move quickly, while Carlos was still learning how to read him. As they spent each day together, however, their communication became smoother.

鈥淭rust is the biggest thing,鈥� Carlos says. 鈥淲hen I first got him, he didn鈥檛 know me, we had to learn to trust each other.鈥�

Consistency helped. Like all canines in the program, Krasavec lives with Carlos, so their relationship extends well beyond their working hours. Carlos provides care, training, and reassurance, becoming Krasavec鈥檚 鈥渟afe place鈥� and source of support and direction. 

Carlos also learned Krasavec鈥檚 cues: His breathing changes, his tail accelerates, and his body shakes when he finds a target. Carlos can distinguish those signals from Krasavec鈥檚 usual high energy without distracting him from the source. 

Finding Their Rhythm as a Security Canine Team

Krasavec performs with drive and independence. Carlos has learned to give him the space to do so. Rather than directing his every movement, Carlos lets Krasavec work through the search, stepping in with guidance when needed.

Krasavec is eager to work and can bring a lot of energy to the start of a search. Carlos has learned how to help him channel that enthusiasm. He asks Krasavec to sit, makes eye contact, raises his hand and calmly says, 鈥淓asy.鈥� After a few seconds, they restart at a more deliberate pace, helping Krasavec maintain his energy throughout longer assignments. 

That balance between independence and guidance was already taking shape during certification shortly after they were paired. As they moved through searches without bumping into each other or tangling the leash, observers commented on how naturally they worked together. Carlos describes it as a 鈥渄ance.鈥� Krasavec leads the search, while Carlos follows his cues, providing direction without getting in his way.

Keeping Krasavec鈥檚 Detection Dog Training Fresh

Daily training strengthens their communication. Carlos varies the training environment, search setup, and level of difficulty. That variety exposes Krasavec to changing conditions while helping Carlos understand how his canine partner learns. Krasavec鈥檚 ball remains a consistent form of positive reinforcement and a powerful motivator.

A monthly log helps Carlos track Krasavec鈥檚 training and identify areas to reinforce in future sessions. Each session builds the team鈥檚 proficiency, communication, and trust.

Adapting to Different Security Environments

Working at a major sports venue can expose Carlos and Krasavec to changing levels of activity throughout an assignment. From busy crowds to quieter areas of the venue, the team relies on the same familiar routine and established communication.

Krasavec is comfortable working around people and stays focused amid much of the activity and noise that come with a busy venue. Carlos adjusts their approach based on the conditions, helping Krasavec maintain his focus throughout the search.

Building Trust Through Partnership

More than anything, Krasavec has taught Carlos patience. His natural ability and strong drive have helped Carlos appreciate that every canine has an individual working style.

Rather than comparing Krasavec with other security canines or expecting every training session to be identical, Carlos meets him where he is.  He pays attention to what works best for Krasavec, gives him room to work independently (while maintaining control of Krasavec),and builds on the strengths they have developed together. For Carlos, the most rewarding moments are often the smallest ones: Krasavec settling into the right pace, working confidently and responding to the cues they have developed together. Each reflects the trust and understanding they have built as a team.

That partnership continues after the workday ends. At home, Krasavec is part of the family, spending his off-duty time hanging out with Carlos before it is time to get back to work.
